"Memento Moeras" is a collaboration between artist Anna Patarakina and poet Annmarie Little. Rooted in the Dutch word for marsh (“moeras”) and inspired by the idea of “memento mori,” the work explores the connection between self-identity and the world around us. The installation features photographs of a woman emerging from a pond, accompanied by a poem that speaks to loneliness, struggle, and the often-hidden nature of pain.

Story Behind the Art

During the creation of a collaborative poetry-photography book with Anna Patarakina, Annmarie Little learned of her cancer diagnosis. One planned photograph captured her emerging from a pond — a moment that became a powerful metaphor for resilience and the unseen struggles we face. Paired with Annmarie’s poem, the piece tells a unified story of endurance and inner strength.

Beyond the personal battle, Memento Moeras also reflects the depth of friendship — not as rescue, but as faith in one’s ability to overcome. It stands as a testament to the power of art to transform hardship into hope.

Mixed media installation combining photography and spoken word. A single photo print anchors the space, accompanied by a 5 minute 22 second video in which poetry is performed over moving image.

The piece was shown as part of the group exhibition The Big Other The Little Other at Torriano Meeting House.
